Frequently Asked Questions

Installation & Compatibility

  • Which guitar types are compatible with the Bognar Pickup System?

The BPS currently has one version available, the ST PRO. The ST PRO is compatible with right-handed Fender Stratocaster* guitars that have the 11-screw pickguard pattern.

You can install the ST PRO into other Stratocaster-style guitars, but some modifications may be necessary.

Please check the Fitment Guide for more information.

*Stratocaster is a registered trademark of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.

  • Will the BPS be available for other guitar types?

Yes! We are planning to implement the BPS for other guitars and also for basses.

  • How complicated is it to install the ST-PRO version into my guitar?

If your guitar is compatible with the system according to the Fitment Guide, the installation is fairly simple. You can install it with basic tools without soldering, easier than changing a pickup.
Watch/read our Installation Guide for more info.

  • What does “100% analog signal path” means?

It means that the electric signal of the pickups is never digitally processed. The guitar remains very dynamic and touch sensitive. There are no delays or unnatural behaviors in the sound.

  • What kind of pickups are used in the Bognar Pickup System?

We use rail humbucker pickups, which are integrated with the rest of the electronics in an innovative way. Because of this, the pickups have better frequency response and better sustain than normal rail humbucker pickups. The single coil sounds are also noiseless.

  • What is the output level of the pickups?

The output level of the system is adjustable. You can set the output level for each preset in 1 dB increments, with a maximum of 2.2V RMS. This feature allows you to create a single coil sound that produces more output than even the hottest active pickups.

  • What does the Main knob do?

The Main Switch is a 12 position rotary switch, which is used for the following functions:
    • turn on, programming mode (PR)
    • turn off (OFF)
    • change Preset Bank (A-J)

  • Can I use the guitar without the app?

Absolutely! You only need to use the app to program and monitor the presets in your guitar.

Find out more in the User’s Manual.

  • What is a preset?

A Preset is a group of guitar configuration parameters, including:
    – Pickup parameters (state and level)
    – EQ parameters
    – Overdrive parameters
    – Output level parameter
    – Potentiometer setup.
Presets can be edited in the App, and assigned to switch position.

  • Is there any factory presets/preset templates?

There are 80+ preprogrammed preset templates available in the App, categorized in 5 groups:

    – Single Coil
    – Humbucker
    – Overdrive
    – Distortion
    – Fuzz

50 of those presets are loaded onto your guitar as factory presets and includes iconic clean and dirty sounds.

More info about using the templates.

  • How many pereset can I use in the guitar?

You can store up to 50 presets in your guitar. Through the App, presets can be assigned to 50 Preset Positions. Preset Positions are determined by the states of the 5-way selector and the Main switch.

    Preset Positions (e.g. A1, B4, J3)

    Bank A: A1 – A5

    Bank B: B1 – B5

    Bank C: C1 – C5

    Bank J: J1 – J5

  • How can I customize the potentiometers?

You can customize the potentiometers via the App.
When you edit a preset, you can assign a potentiometer to control a specific parameter. There are numerous parameters available, such as pickup level, output level, tone, and overdrive gain. Each preset can be set up uniquely.
For an example visit the Overdrive article in the App Guide.

  • Can I use my pedalboard with the system?

Yes. The Bognar Pickup System works with pedals just like any active pickup.

  • How should I set up my amplifier for optimal signal-to-noise ratio?

The optimal setting may vary depending on the amplifier. A good rule of thumb is to increase the input gain of the clean channel of your amplifier while decreasing the output level of the guitar.

Battery & Charging

  • Do I have to change the battery?

No. The electronics has a built in Li-ion rechargeable battery which provides long playing time and has a long lifetime.

  • How can I check the battery level?

You can check the battery level in the smartphone app, by connecting it to your guitar. The battery percent is displayed on the top right corner of the screen.

When not connected to the guitar, switch to one of the Preset banks (A-J). The battery level can be checked by turning the Volume pot all the way down. The LED will signal the level according to this table:

    2 blue blinks - 100-75%

    1 blue blink - 75-50%

    1 red blink - 50-25%

    2 red blinks - 25-10%

    3 red blinks - 10-0%

When the battery reaches it’s minimum, the LED starts to blink quickly in red and the guitar switches off in minutes.

  • How do I charge the battery?

To charge the battery use the included USB to JACK cable and a 5V USB charger.
For optimal charging performance and safety, please use a good quality USB Charger that produces at least 1A of current. Charging a fully depleted battery takes around 3 hours to complete. Note that charging time depends on the quality of the USB charger and may take longer than 3 hours. We highly recommend fully charging the battery before using it for the first time.

  • When should I charge the guitar?

These batteries have no memory effect, so you can charge your guitar whenever you like. To extend the battery lifespan, don’t let the charge drop below 30%, and keep the guitar away from heat, especially during charging.

  • Is it possible to extend battery life beyond 8 hours?

Yes! Use the Battery Saver tools to prolong the battery life, by reducing consumption when the guitar is not in play.

Battery Saver can be set up in the app. More info

  • Can I use the guitar when the battery is empty?

No. Similarly to an active guitar, the battery must be charged in order to produce a sound.
